Welcome - The best of 2010

In this post Ten Cocktail Bar is celebrating the end of another top quality year, with a review of the best of 2010.  We have the best of the FITC photographs, a review of our most popular events, look at the up-and-coming events for your 2011, what to do for the perfect New Years party, some of the top news stories from 2010 and we have a laugh at some of the best videos from the web.


THE BEST OF FITC 2010:
In 2010 Ten launched its photographic competition called FITC (Face in the Crowd) which has attracted over 1000 new friends to Ten's Facebook group, has given away over £300 in prize bar tabs and generated nearly 10,000 visitors to our blogspot, some from as far away as Geveva and Wesconsin, USA.  Our photographer Lukas (currently writing in third person) has taken over 3,000 photographs which are being used as profile pictures across Sussex.

Each week two people, male and female, are chosen to win a bar tab of £10 simply for being selected out of the crowd.  Here is a look at some of the prize winning faces from this year.

A LITTLE EARLY 'FITC' FUN:
In the early days of the FITC competition we were happy to poke a bit of fun at some of the more unusual visitors.

My personal favorite is one of the shots of our Kazakhstan friends (left) sporting his best cardigan, lovably referred to as the Disco Cardigan.

2011 brings a massive event to Ten Cocktail Bar, and we give you the chance to appear on Sky 1 and break a world record of your choice.  Alongside DJ Digger's attempt at breaking the world record for consecutive days DJ-ing (the current record stands at 5 days) whilst Terry Cole, holder of over 200 world records,  breaks a record every day.  If you want to get involved then get in touch and we'll make a star out of you. 

If you have ever made a resolution to change or better yourself, Ten is here to support you with a drive to get everyone achieving a dream.  Have you ever asked yourself "what did you do with your life?", then this year put yourself in the only book that matters and achieve something new with us!



THIS WAS 2010 THAT WAS - HOW WAS IT FOR YOU?:

So much has happened over the last 12 months, whether its a celebrity going off to the big green room in the sky, or a film busting some blocks, this little list I've compiled should go towards a decent reminisce.  Some of these events may have by-passed regular news networks or media attention but they all go towards making 2010 one of the most 'productive' or eventful for the human race.

1. Jacko - over and out:  In case you didn't notice we lost one of pop's most infamous individuals.  It may have seemed like a viral fake but, the pale, dull, lifeless body of Michael Jackson finally gave in.  Sony jumped on the chance to buy all MJ's unreleased material and the rights to the outstanding work for a mere $250,000,000! 

2. New discovery at Ground Zero:  According to the April 5 edition of the BBC News, scientists searched a decade later for any remains of over 1,000 people still missing from the 911 attack which occurred Sept 11, 2001, and caused the collapse of the World Trade Center Twin Towers in New York City. On July 15, workers constructing the new World Trade Center discovered an 18th Century 32 ft-long ship (9.8m) hull in an abandoned riverbed at Ground Zero. 

3. Eruption Disruption:  There was a massive volcanic eruption in Iceland, making a right mess of aisle 4!  No one could fly anywhere, and Mrs. Goggins on till 6 said it was pretty inconvenient. 

4.  Pakistan Floodistan:  On July 26th huge quantites of rain flooded one fifth of Pakistan.  The resulting flood disaster affected 20,000,000 people creating the worst flood in Pakistani history.  More than 1,700 people died, nearly 3,000 were injured and the price of a Nike trainer went up a bit.


SOMETHING ELSE: 
Have you ever wondered why there are more visits to tyhe emergency room at this time of year? Well its because when we are forced to spend time with our family in an enclosed space, they will try to kill you. Not because that jumper you gave them was clearly knitted by a team of blind monkies, or because you forgot to get cards AGAIN, but because they are your family and they love you. Welcome - Your Guide to Ten's Festive Flow

NEW YEARS EVE:

New Years Eve, the staple of every festive season is going to be more exciting than any poorly worded similé or analogy.

Starting with a complimentary champagne and a finger buffet from 8pm - 10pm, Ten will be stockings it shelves with the best quality drinks, giving you FREE party poppers, confetti canons and fantastic champagne deals.

POPULARITÉ Á LA MYTHOLOGY:

Being Christmas those of us who are of 'that' persuasion, like to tell stories.  A favorite at this point in the year is the birth story and many other tales from Christian book of kids stories.  Oddly the tale that is told at Christmas wasn't exclusive, turns out that Mathusela and a few others had a similar upbringing.  Mathusela was born in stable, had three wize men visit him, performed miracles and died to save mankind - a little familiar I think, but then SITCOMs didn't come along till the Greeks got bored of buggery.

So in celebration of this Listphobia.com had put together a top ten of the most popular mythological creatures - I'm not sure how this list was established and who had voted and how accurate the list may be.  This aside, it has a tenuous relevance and therefore its here!

1. Dragons:  From China, Greece and Europe.
2. Unicorn:  My guess is that there was some kids involved in the survey.
3. Vampires:  In my opinion this should be top of the list, and maybe fuelled by the 'Twilight' films (slight pause while I assemble my masculinity) which actually weren't all that bad!
4. Werewolves:  In the final part of Teen Wolf Too there is a panning shot of the crowd celebrating.  If you look closly you can see one of the crowd has his penis out.  Google it.
5. Pegasus:  Definitely girls voting for these creatures!  Apparently it was made up of the Gorgon Medusa blood as it spilled from her neck (after Perseus slit here throat) and the sea-god Poseidon!?!  But in the old version of Clash of the Titans Perseus clearly rides Pegasus around before killing Medusa.  Continuity was obviously a recent invention!
6. Centaurs:  Pretty cool creatures, but I can see a horsey theme growing!
7. Pheonixs:  The idea for this thing arose from Greece, China, Egypt and Persia.  Ok, so this bird has powers of rebirth and immortality but what did it ever do before or after?  Seems like a bit of a cop-out as it only ever appears after an event has happened, then flies about taking all the attention.  I had an ex girlfriend like that!
8. Minotaur:  They certainly loved a game of biological consequences, this time its the head which is an animal.  Has a slight weakness for women and brightly coloured wool.
9. Mermaids:  Curious, but I'm sure we all love them.
10. Medusa:  Again with the biological amalgamation, and a weakness for reflective surfaces.

DIED ON THE JOB:
We celebrate the birth of Christ at Christmas, and a few months later we celebrate the rebirth.  But poor old Jesus was busy 'doing what he loved' when he died, something I wouldn't be against.  It actually wouldn't be a bad thing to die taking pictures of people partying in swanky London, but if I was my mate Pete, I was be wholey gutted if I was to kick my bucket whilst mopping the toilets at MacDonalds.

Here is a short article on other famous people who have died on the job - and that's not the Elvis sense of the word 'job'!  Some of these people are dearly missed by friends and family.

Tommy Cooper

The British comedian died live on TV while performing at Her Majesties Theater in London in 1984.

Steve Irwin

The Australian naturalist was killed by a stingray while filming a documentary in 2006.

Sid James

The English comedian and actor collapsed on stage and died in 1976.

Roy Kinnear

The British comedian fell off a horse and died while filming in Spain in 1988.

Brandon Lee

The son of Bruce Lee was accidentally shot and died while filming The Crow in North Carolina in 1993.

William Ellsworth Robinson

Chung Ling Soo (Stage name) was an American magician who was shot on stage when a trick went wrong at the Wood Green Empire in London in 1918.

Vic Morrow

The American actor was filming “The Twilight Zone” The Movie in 1982 when he was decapitated by an out of control helicopter.

Tyrone Power

The American actor died while filming in Spain in 1958.

Karl Wallenda

The German tightrope walker fell to his death while walking a tightrope between two buildings in 1978.

Les Harvey

The rock singer was electrocuted on stage in Swansea, Wales in 1972.
