Welcome - Cocktail Conspiracy

In this weeks post we look at the weekly entertainment at Ten, we remind you of our FREE Internet at lunchtimes, have this week's Cocktail Spotlight and as Ten's building celebrates its 85th birthday we look at what was happening at the time.  Plus, in case that wasn't enough, we have some of the most impressive DJ booths around and we take a trip to YouTube for a welcomed distraction.

COCKTAIL SPOTLIGHT; WHO DUN IT?
This weeks cocktail is the Cosmopolitan, presented in a Martini glass its another cocktail whose past is shrouded in doubt and offers an interesting history.

The origins of the cosmopolitan are somewhat disputed. It is likely that the drink was created independently by different bartenders since the 1970's.  It is generally recognized that John Caine brought the drink to San Francisco in around 1987 from Minnesota.  The same year in Manhattan, the internationally recognized version of the cocktail was created by Toby Cecchini and based on a poorly described version of Cheryl Cook's creation.

So from this we can see what the problem is, convergent evolution.  A theory where the same idea is born in different areas of the world at the same time, for example certain types of birds on opposite sides of the world came up with the same solution at the same time.  They worked out that if they dropped a nut from the air it would open for them.  So whose nuts dropped first?  Although John Caine was credited for the drink at his club called the Cork and Cleaver Steakhouse in Minnesota, it has been shown that a man named Neal Murray was working there and was credited with being its creator.  After all, Caine was the owner of the venue rather than the worker.  Perhaps it is similar to the Earl of Sandwich crediting himself with the discovery of the sandwich, whereas in my opinion it was more likely his house keeper who had presented him with food stuffs between bread.

So what about the Manhattan's?  If Cecchini was working from (a bad version of) Cook's recipe would that bring the credit to New York?  But it seems that this isn't a reliable information as it is widely believed that Cheryl Cook was a fictional character and hailed from South Beach, Florida.  An online interview in 2006 with Gary Regan and Mardee Haidin Regan quoted Cook as saying:

"What overwhelmed me was the number of people who ordered Martinis just to be seen with a Martini glass in their hand. It was on this realization that gave me the idea to create a drink that everyone could palate and was visually stunning in that classic glass. This is what the Cosmo was based on."
-- -- Cheryl Cook, October 2006.

This direct quote from 'the lady herself' would suggest that she had arrived at the Cosmo as a solution to a problem, however her original recipe listed "Absolut Citron, a splash of Triple Sec, a drop of Roses lime and just enough cranberry to make it oh so pretty in pink." Absolut Citron wasn't introduced anywhere until 1988.

So who dun it?  Well, we may never know that but if I may offer my opinion I would suggest that it is like God's finger in Michelangelo's Cysteine Chapel.  An unknown employee painted them but they weren't important enough to be remembered so 'the boss' took all the credit.  Now those fingers/cocktails are one of the most seen/drunk and even though many people had contributed to such a masterpiece, they became insignificant.  I shall conclude with a single word, TYPICAL!

DJ BOOTHARAMA:
For any bar or club the DJ's booth is where the highly paid DJs perform their magic, and as such is a prime part of the venue and a focal point for the dancers and visitors.  At Ten we are lucky to have a converted church which has original features such as a pulpit which is now the hub for our DJs.  Giving the DJ a 'theatre' for their performance is what sets venues apart and in this article we look at some of the unique designs for DJ booths around the world.

HAPPY 85th:
Ten's unique venue was 85 years old in August and to mark this occasion we have a look at what was happening in the world at that time.  From firsts to lasts there was certainly plenty of history in the making that year.

  • Mussolini takes over Italy.
  • Tennessee, USA, makes it illegal to teach evolution.
  • Edinburgh's Murreyfield stadium opens.
  • First film shown on a flight - British Air.
  • World Fare opens in Chicago.
  • Canada allows the sale of beer.

Welcome - Sublime, Hypobanana

In this weeks' post we introduce the Sublime Events crew and tell you about how to spend your bank holiday weekend this August, we've added our newest staff members to the Staff page, updated our DJs and Evening Entertainment page, we reveal the re-branded Friday and Saturday nights and as if that's not enough we'll be misbehaving at the back of the YouTube bus.

SUBLIME BANK HOLIDAY:
Recently formed by two hard working and motivated dj's, Ross-B and Macro-B, Sublime have been causing a stir on the scene: Their intuition for what records make a party and move the crowd are second to none. Sublime sets are a tight blend of House ranging from classic to Deep and taking in huge influences from Tech and Progressive. Together they have a career spaning over 15 years.

Sublime events are always a lot of fun. Offering quality music in safe surroundings and a sexy intimate vibe.

With their first event on the 29th July 2011, Sublime are set to rock the decks on the last Friday of every month and will occasionally feature electonic band and live PA, Base Mosquito.  And don't forget that they will be bringing the noise on the Bank Holiday Sunday on the 28th August.

Who are base Mosquito?  According to their website they're designed, produced and created by - Ret Alex (London).

"Surrender your consciousness to a twisted cross over of Electronica, House, Urban, Trip Hop, Dub, Street, Tech-Funk, Tech-Electro, Underground Pop, Nu Jazz, Alternative and Experimental ...(I think that is enough eh??) dance music, journeying from jazzy into a tribal realm of mind-altering melodies and insane beats. Base Mosquito had a monthly residency at Exit Bar on Brick Lane, performed regularly at Camden, Scala Kings Cross, Area Vauxhall, Club Warehouse and play bars, clubs and festivals across the UK. Experience their sound as they join forces with the power of the Kokopelli to bring you an auditory orgasm in cutting edge music."

SOMETHING ELSE:
So, its another YouTube section and this week it was hard to decide the theme as our articles are of a fair mix of things.  And so, here are a bunch of videos which appeal to my change of circumstances.  Having moved in with a partner I am finding myself assuming that as the man of the house, I suddenly have the power of. DIY.  After electrocuting both of my cats and painting one blue I decided that DIY is for people who have the desire to inflict some kind of permanent damage on themselves.  Enjoy!

Welcome - Something a bit Wifi?

In this weeks post we let you loose on the Internet at Ten, we welcome our 20000th hit on our blog, we introduce you to 'Catbook' and have a kids gallery in honour of Dan, and take a well earned holiday in Failand with YouTube Airlines.

Firstly, from all the staff and friends of Ten, a huge congratulations to General Manager Dan and his girlfriend Katie on the birth of their baby this week - A healthy 8lb 6oz girl.  The staff are having a pool on the first words, and so far 'ok' and 'right' are top of the board.

And in honour of this occasion we start the blog with a look at the beautiful kids that parents proudly display on the net.

It's always a bit strange when someone has a photo of their child as their Facebook profile picture, it makes you wonder if the page is for an adult of a child - albeit the latter would be yet to master its motor skills enough to bash out a sentence on a keyboard.  Although it begs the question "how long till there's a 'Babybook'?", where parents can create a profile for their sprog.

We already have 'Catbook' where the users can create a profile for their beloved feline and interact with other cats.  According to the site one 'cat' called Spitfire has posted that he is concerned that Littlefoot and Pushkin are being quiet today.  That's probably got something to do with the fact that ITS A CAT!  It seems that dog owners are very slightly different, Dogbook exists but only as an app which suggests that dog owners maybe just as odd as their cat-owning-counterparts but they know how to work an iphone.

Perhaps there should be a site exclusively for disillusioned loners who enjoy projecting human characteristics upon animals and objects in order to synthesise a relationships with people they don't know, manifesting themselves through a fictional body thus avoiding having to deal with how the world interacts with the REAL them.  Actually there is, but Myspace is sooooo 2006!

      SOMETHING ELSE:
In true blog form here are a few videos from the vaults of YouTube with the theme of kids and babies. OMG there are some real cuties in this video selection, and it proves there's nothing more likely to brighten your day than the sound of a child laughing.

Here at Ten we have a healthy admiration for photography and images which evoke certain feelings, and so we have provided you with a short episode of pictures from the vast array of fun images there are on the Internet.

Best News Photos of 2010 - From National Geographic Heavy rains from tropical storm Agatha likely triggered the collapse of a huge sinkhole in Guatemala on Sunday, seen above a few days afterward.
In the strictly geologic use of the word, a sinkhole happens when water erodes solid bedrock, carving an underground cavity that can then collapse. Many parts of the United States are at risk for that type of event.
